H System is GO

Image
Hey all, sorry for the lack of updates these past couple of weeks. I've been pushing really hard to get the H system ready and have finally reached the point where I can finish the final footage for the video (which should be ready in a few days). I've also managed to improve the battle performance further so that on my rig it is basically running at the 60 FPS cap all the time. So yeah, at this point the battle system doesn't really resemble RPG Maker at all anymore (horray). While some of what is going on in the screenshot is reminiscent of other H games, there are a lot of new interface widgets that I'll leave you to guess about up until I can make a dev journal post or something to explain the H system better.  Feel free to ask questions though! I should note that I'm assuming some of you may not like the idea of a "struggle" minigame within the battle system. For those of you for which that is the case, I plan on giving you the capability to ch

Dev Journal #3 - Shredding Clothes and Stuff

Image
I'm back with another development journal post from the Patreon feed!  This time it's about the art process related to the clothing destruction system. Dev Journal #3 - Shredding Clothes and Stuff Original version published on Patreon, October 18, 2014 Let me throw this out there right away. Capturing the look of torn and damaged clothing that is popular in hentai and comics is a huge pain in the ass to accomplish in 3D on a poseable figure. One major hurdle involves the fact that clothing doesn't animate in the exact same way that the body does, and this alone will make it impossible to get the effect of stretched fabric/material around skin. A second issue is that unless physics simulation is enabled on the clothing you aren't going to get wrinkles that you would expect (and the results probably wouldn't be great for what we're going for here anyways). The critical issue though is that poseable, conforming clothing models require that the core geome

Dev Journal #2 - Making RPG Maker Suck Less

Image
Hey everyone!  Here's the next entry of the development journal posts from the Patreon feed. Dev Journal #2 - Making RPG Maker Suck Less Original version published on Patreon, September 21, 2014 The topic I'd like to talk about this time is the lovely platform called RPG Maker, how I ended up choosing to start a full project utilizing it, and some of the complications that I've overcome so far to bring it closer to the 21st century. When I started this project I really didn't plan for it to grow to where it has now. I don't think many people start RPG Maker projects thinking they will spend multiple years on them, but so far it's been a pretty solid experience as I've gotten the chance to practice my development skills in Ruby (a completely new language to me). The major catalyst for the project's growth was the art. I personally didn't think I'd be able to create a detailed, unique art style that I'd be happy with while being a

Dev Journal #1 - The Good Stuff Originally published on Patreon, September 7, 2014 Hello everyone, and welcome to the first  Malise and the Machine  development journal post! Over the past few days I was generating a list of topics that I'd like to go into more detail about; I then threw out the list and decided to start off with a simple post, with some sample concept art showing off a bit of the good stuff. A goal of the H-system in the game is to provide a highly dynamic experience by way of unique artwork for various combinations of status effects. These status effects include all sorts of unfortunate situations our protagonist
